EYE HEALTH & FASHION? Read on
Whenever you are outside in the sun - you are exposed to UV radiation! Fashion eyewear can help protect your eyes!
UV radiation falls into two categories (UVA and UVB). These rays can penetrate and change your skin and eye cell structure, which puts an individual at risk of skin cancer and eye diseases that can lead to permanent vision loss (e.g., cataracts, cornea damage, macular degeneration and cancer, etc.).
Worst times of day for sun exposure
- 8 AM - 10 AM for your skin
- 2 PM - 4 PM for your eyes (sun is lower on the horizon, eyes get a direct hit)
What are the best sunglasses for your eyes?
The ones you wear properly, fitted to your face! If you don't cover all of your eyes, you're completely at the mercy of the sun's UV rays.
- Expensive glasses do not guarantee better UV protection.
- Bigger frames can offer more coverage.
- Small sunglasses are not effective.
- Wrapped shapes are best.
- Wraparound designs or side shields are recommended.
- Antireflective coatings can increase UV exposure!
- There is no such thing as sunglasses that are too dark.
- Dark lenses can be harmful if they do not offer good UV!
- UV protection and polarization are not the same!
Bottom Line: For effective eye (retina) protection, your choice of fashion sunglasses (like those sold in our store) - should block all UV rays up to 400 nanometers (nm)!
